Research and identify three and four word phrases that relate to your site's niche. Add as many keywords as possible to a list and constantly update this list. Keywords not only drive traffic to your main web pages but also provide a foundation for your site's content pages to.

Meta tags, Header tags, text emphasis and the addition of keywords are very important to search rankings and the "flavoring" of each page on your website.
Links, Links And More Links.
Inbound links, outbound links, internal linking, link text, all are extremely important to top search rankings. The process of linking never ends and can be the determining factor for search success or failure.
Optimal Site Architecture.
A "flat architecture" is very important to top search rankings. No page that is to be ranked should be any deeper than three clicks away from the home page. Key worded sub directories can aide in search placement.
PageRank Funneling.
Directing Google's PageRank through your website can help "push" key pages up the search ranks. Optimizing your website's PageRank can be very beneficial for Google searches.
Search Rank Monitoring.
You must know where you rank for your chosen keywords and you must monitor your rankings for all of your chosen keywords on a regular basis.
